Beschreibung
Karla Jaspers' essay on German guilt, but also on guilt in general and its fundamental dimensions, was first published in Germany in 1946. The Germans did not welcome its release – just a year after their military defeat, in a situation of turmoil and occupation of their country. However, an American officer overseeing the university reportedly thanked Karl Jaspers, stating that it was not written solely for Germans, but also for the conscience of the victorious Allies. The Czech translation of this author's work was first published in 1969, and it still retains its relevance today. It is by no means merely a historical document illustrating the long-past situation of post-war Germany. The core of the book lies in the realization that we are all responsible for the past, but also for the future, and above all, before the future. As Ladislav Hejdánek points out in his preface, Jaspers' book is anything but moralizing; it is a collection of thoughts and especially questions from a man who himself has gone through many difficult dilemmas.
