This Czech-language book examines the dramatic history of cookbooks in post-war Czechoslovakia, when centrally controlled publishing gave collections of recipes a special status. Nutrition experts used them to transform the eating habits of socialist workers on a mass scale. During the 1950s, cookbooks became a form of professional medical literature and exemplary educational-propaganda pamphlets, with their content, structure and graphic design subordinated to the role they were expected to play in the newly developing society. It took another three decades for them to gradually free themselves from this role. The book explores how this transformation of the genre took place, who wrote and read socialist cookbooks, what strategies publishers used to uphold or challenge genre conventions, and why humorous caricature drawings rather than photographs became the typical illustrations accompanying recipes. The author addresses these and many other questions as a contribution to the history of the modern book.
