Beschreibung
This monograph offers a multifaceted view of the extensive work of Moscow conceptualist Dmitrij Prigov (1940–2007). It analyses his poetry, prose, theoretical writings, performances and visual art in the light of his lifelong project, named after his own civil identity, Dmitrij Alexandrovič Prigov. By emphasising his subjectivity, Prigov paradoxically sought to escape biographical readings of his own texts. He explored ways of reflecting on Soviet totalitarianism and its influence on individual speech and action without becoming trapped in the illusion of possessing his own “truth”. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he further developed this strategy with regard to plurality and mediation. Through his self-reflexivity and spontaneity, Prigov continues to inspire younger generations of women artists and artists, including the Pussy Riot collective.
