The book traces the footsteps of a group of Czech expatriates who left the borders of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire for Tsarist Russia in search of a better livelihood in the second half of the 19th century, and follows how their descendants, along with family members, returned through both organized and spontaneous migration back to the territory of their ancestors during the 20th century. A mosaic of memories from long-ago times brings closer the life and thought world of the so-called Volhynian and Chernobyl Czechs living in the second half of the 19th century and for a large part of the 20th century in the territory of present-day Ukraine (then Volhynia and Kyiv Governorates in Tsarist Russia) as well as Czechs living in Kazakhstan. It maps their adaptation and life after resettlement in the territory of present-day Czech Republic, with an emphasis on the little-explored areas of magic and ritual, illness, and folk healing.
