Beschreibung
At the moment of his death in early September 1948, Edvard Beneš was perceived by the vast majority of Czechoslovak society as a hero. Regardless of the complex political and cultural realities, and without people considering his actual, not always successful life story, he represented for many of his fellow citizens nothing less than the embodiment of courage, freedom, democracy, historical justice, and historical satisfaction. The mythical Beneš far surpassed the real Beneš, into whose form a number of ideas, dreams, wishes, expectations, but also self-deceptions projected by Czechoslovak society in the first half of the 20th century were reflected, shaping it. This book attempts to depict that multifaceted symbolic environment, its formation, forms, and significance through the mythical image of Edvard Beneš. It is jointly published by Academia, the Masaryk Institute and Archive of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and Masaryk University.
