Beschreibung
The fates of Czechoslovak legionnaires in Russia during and after World War I are an important issue in the modern history of the Czech nation. Along with the legionnaires, many Czech and Slovak civilians who originally lived and worked in Russia returned to their homeland, fleeing from the Bolsheviks to save at least their lives. In doing so, they had to leave most of their possessions in the ruins of the former Tsarist Empire, devastated by revolution and civil war. The memoirs bring closer the story of one Czech family that returned home with the legionnaires and experienced the entire ordeal with them, from the harrowing train journey along the Trans-Siberian Railway to the 'around the world' boat trip back to their native Czech lands. They describe the specific conditions and daily life during the entire transport, thus providing further insights into the fates of the legionnaires and especially the repatriates from Russia.
