When World War II broke out, Arthur Koestler was in southern France working on his major novel Darkness at Noon. For the next two months, he wrote it in Paris until he was arrested and interned along with other anti-Nazis, men and women who fought against the Gestapo, refugees from persecution. They all formed the "scum of society" that the French imprisoned, released, re-imprisoned, and – in far too many tragic cases – ultimately handed over to Nazi executioners. Koestler recounts the story of his own imprisonment and eventual escape without heroism, humanely, sometimes even with humor; however, he places it directly in the grim context of what happened to fellow prisoners who were not as fortunate as he was. "By that time, the European continent had reached a stage," he wrote then, "when it was possible to tell a person without irony that he should be grateful to be shot rather than strangled, beheaded, or beaten to death."
