Beschreibung
Gary B. Cohen's study "Education and the Middle Class in Imperial Austria 1848–1918" deals with the transformations of secondary and higher education in the non-Hungarian part of the former Habsburg monarchy. It examines its social, class, and national background, as well as the attitude of the Austrian authorities towards the growing public interest. It also highlights the high degree of dependence of Austrian educational reforms on the German model. The reader will learn about the origin and development of the maturity exam, the gradual equalization of real schools with classical gymnasiums, the reasons for the enormous number of Jewish students at Austrian universities, and many other issues. The analysis of the composition of university students is based on the two largest pre-Litava universities at the end of the 19th century – the University of Vienna and Charles University in Prague.
