Beschreibung

David Oppenheim (1664–1736), the chief rabbi of Prague at the beginning of the 18th century, built a unique collection of Jewish books and manuscripts, all of which have survived and are stored in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. His remarkable collection testifies to countless connections among Jews across state borders and to contacts between Jews and Christians. This library served rabbinical scholars and representatives of Jewish communities, introducing new readers to old books and functioning as a unique source of personal authority, through which Oppenheim gained fame in Jewish society and beyond. Based on a careful reconstruction of the archive, the book by Joshua Teplitsky opens a window into the social life of books in early modern Europe.
