Beschreibung
The monograph focuses on four orthographic-phonetic phenomena, specifically the prothetic v- (e.g., vokno), the narrowing of é > í (dobrý mlíko), the diphthongization of ý > ej (bílej mlejn), and the initial diphthongization of ú > ou (oumysl), as found in printed literary monuments from the 16th to 18th centuries. The core of the monograph is a linguistic analysis of contemporary literary sources in an effort to capture the customs of the time, developmental trends, and differences from today's linguistic situation. The work is based on more than 100 prints from the realm of religious, historiographical, and linguistically reflective texts. The monograph significantly contributes to the understanding of Czech in the 16th to 18th centuries; it supplements existing knowledge with new information and corrects some older judgments, such as the so-called linguistic decline unjustly attributed to Baroque Czech.
