Beschreibung
The Pythian Odes are the second of Pindar's four cycles of victory odes (epinikia), consisting of twelve odes celebrating victories in the Pythian Games: traditional pan-Hellenic athletic competitions held every four years in honor of the god Apollo in Delphi. Pindar's epinikia, typically commissioned by wealthy aristocrats, blend praise for the patron with traditional myths and riddling reflections on the relationship between man, fate, and the gods. The result is a unique poetic perspective in which current events of the human world become part of the divine order of reality, and myth seems to unfold here and now. The Olympic Odes were translated into Czech by J. Šprincl (Prague 1968; 2002). The Nemean and Isthmian Odes, like the Pythian Odes, have never been translated into Czech (except for short excerpts).
