Czech and Slovak readers encountered Bulgarian literature daily before 1989, but it was understandably not presented in its complete form in then Czechoslovakia. Similar to other countries east of the Iron Curtain, there was also unofficial literature in Bulgaria (samizdat, "drawer literature," banned). This book presents the first comprehensive view of unofficial Bulgarian literature in the context of the totalitarian regime there. The individual chapters offer possible interpretative solutions to selected literary texts in broader cultural and political contexts. Excerpts from poems, prose, dramas, essays, and manifestos are presented in Czech, making the monograph accessible not only to academic circles of Bulgarianists, Slavic scholars, literary historians, and students but also to a wider lay audience.
