Beschreibung

The book consists of studies dedicated to primitive forms of social agitation, such as social banditry, secret village communities, peasant revolutionary movements of a millenarian type, the mafia, pre-industrial urban gangs, and workers' religious brotherhoods. The interpretation focuses on the area of Western and Southern Europe, particularly Southern Italy, Sicily, and Andalusia, from the period of the French Revolution. The publication attempts to find answers to the question of to what extent these movements can be considered reformist or revolutionary, what the essence of their revolutionary nature is, what role they can play in the political life of the countries in which they appear, and whether and under what conditions they can transform or integrate into 'modern' political movements. Eric Hobsbawm (1917–2012) was a prominent British Marxist historian and intellectual. He primarily dealt with the period of the so-called long 19th century, the rise of industrial capitalism, nationalism, as well as the history of the 20th century.
