The collective monograph Republic of Lawyers presents contributions that shed light on the significant involvement of lawyers in the society of the newly formed state. Several chapters focus on the situation in Slovakia, where it was necessary to create new personnel structures, particularly in the judiciary and public administration. The establishment of the new Comenius University in Bratislava laid the groundwork for the emergence of Slovak legal science and the development of Slovak legal terminology. Other contributions reflect important legal reforms of the time – the main goal was the unification of the legal areas of pre-Moravia and post-Moravia Czechoslovakia, which had been intensively worked on since the 1920s, with many preparations and implementations already underway – as well as reforms in the area of public service or regulations concerning the reduction of working hours and limitations on night work. Chapters dedicated to the field of advocacy, issues of judicial decision-making, or the resolution of labor disputes, as well as the social consequences of the rapid increase in the number of law school graduates, addressing the so-called overproduction of lawyers, describe areas of interwar life that are now little known.
