In his book, the author recalls the groundbreaking events of the 20th century. He was born in Prague's Malá Strana, where he also spent his early childhood. Later, he lived with his family in what is now Belarus. In 1920, he participated in the Polish-Bolshevik War. After Poland was invaded by Nazi Germany in September 1939, he fell into Soviet captivity during the retreat. As one of the few, he escaped the tragic fate of Polish officers murdered by the NKVD in 1940. His testimony about the missing friends and colleagues and his unsuccessful search for them is summarized in the books 'Starobělské vzpomínky' and 'V nelidské zemi.' After the war, Czapski lived in Paris, where he belonged to a 'strong handful' of Polish exile artists and writers gathered around the magazine Kultura.
