Beschreibung
The book provides historically valuable contributions to the understanding of the artistic atmosphere of late Romanticism and Czech Art Nouveau at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and their connection to national culture, as perceived by the author through the lens of a writer-dramatist and lawyer. Maria elucidates the meaning of his many years of wandering in Italy, which not only prompted him to write the art-historical travel guide Italie (1925) but primarily led to the creation of most of his plays from the so-called Ferrara trilogy: Parisina (1916), Lucrezia Borgia (1917), Torquato Tasso (1917). The author critically assesses the development of Czech literature since the 19th century and explains his shift to novel writing from a legal and professional background, which, apart from gaining reader popularity, also brought him numerous life difficulties as he exposed the social conditions of the First Czechoslovak Republic.
