The book offers a new perspective on the story of the discovery of AIDS medications, associated with the name of Czech scientist Antonín Holý. This success of Czech science is also the story of the collaboration between Czech chemist and Belgian virologist Erik de Clercq and American chemist and successful manager of Gilead Sciences John Martin. Their collaboration is set against the historical backdrop not only of the development of virology and the spread of the deadly AIDS epidemic but also of the Cold War. The main focus of the book is the narrative of how the substances synthesized by Antonín Holý made their way across the Iron Curtain to the West and what happened to them thereafter before they became a successful drug. Antonín Holý's discovery is discussed in the book as an important piece in the great mosaic that paved the way for the medications that saved millions of lives.
