In his book, Wolf Gruner demonstrates that anti-Jewish policies were not only directed from Berlin and determined by the occupiers but were often accelerated by the Czech government or local authorities. The proactive measures taken by Prague often anticipated central decisions in the German Reich and other occupied territories, such as in 1941 regarding the labeling of Jews. Based on previously unknown weekly reports from the Jewish Religious Community in Prague sent to Adolf Eichmann, Gruner provides the first detailed analysis of the consequences of persecution for the lives of Jewish residents, as well as their reactions and resistance. Gruner thoroughly examines the position of the protectorate as an intermediary in the radicalization of the persecution of Jews in Europe.
