On September 27, 1939, the Main Reich Security Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt, RSHA) was formed from the Secret State Police, Criminal Police, and Security Service, led by Reinhard Heydrich until his death. In the leading positions of this institution were young, university-educated individuals who actively engaged in the National Socialist ideology. For this purpose, they often left promising careers in their fields – they were not failed individuals who would otherwise have found no suitable employment. The work of these RSHA personnel was not limited to desk work; after the outbreak of World War II, they actively participated as commanders of intervention squads and units in Poland, the Soviet Union, and the Baltic states in the mass murder of Jews, Poles, and other groups of the population deemed enemies according to Nazi ideology.
