This book presents the cultural diplomacy of the People's Republic of China from 2012 to 2017 as one of the means to secure its position as a global economic and political power. Just as cultural and civilizational authority was used in early and imperial China to shape relations with the surrounding world, contemporary China also seeks to leverage culture to gain soft power and promote state interests. Cultural diplomacy is an important strategy for creating an international image, not least because the ruling Communist Party of China has gradually downplayed orthodox communist ideology since the 1980s and presents China as a bearer of the traditional cultural values of its millennia-old civilization. These manifestations have been particularly noticeable in recent years as China plays an increasingly prominent role in international relations.
