Beschreibung
In a total of 489 trials in Dachau, American justice faced 1,700 criminals of Nazi Germany. This included a wide range of defendants, from Reich leaders to landowners, students, and villagers. They were guilty of participating in atrocities directed against victims of all nationalities that occurred in concentration camps and during transports. This publication addresses a wide range of these trials and offers an understanding of the situation to which German civilization arrived during World War II. It shows that even an ordinary citizen could be devoted to the Nazis with the same fanaticism as Hitler, and it seeks to learn something about those who did not oppose Hitler, tolerated him, or joined him. It thematizes the disturbing fact that many atrocities committed during Hitler's era were the result of personal decisions. The author draws on primary sources, including official court records and review reports on the trials. He describes individual cases and provides detailed information about the defendants, their upbringing, education, careers, behavior during the trials, and afterward.
