Beschreibung
The book presents contributions to the 38th annual interdisciplinary symposium in Plzeň, dedicated to the theme of time in the life of man and society during the 'long' 19th century. The authors of the individual studies focus on both the experience and perception of time from the perspective of various social classes – the aristocracy as well as the underprivileged populations of the countryside and cities – as well as the different meanings or values attributed to the past, present, and future time. Time and its monitoring, especially in the work sphere, are viewed here as effective means of discipline; however, the art-historical contributions also represent various manifestations of the 19th-century man's effort to break free from the dictates of precisely measured time.
