Beschreibung
In just a few years, Islam has transformed from a distant and exotic subject of expert and journalistic discourse into a truly national topic. Discussions about Muslims often represent just a part of broader conflicts, without whose media and political implications we can hardly imagine current events. The debate over this significant, transcendent topic today attracts the urgent attention, and often the heated interest, of a large portion of our fellow citizens. The book Shadows of Minarets: Islam and Muslims as Subjects of Czech Public Debates, edited by Ondřej Beránek and Bronislav Ostřanský, researchers at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, aims to provide a certain testimony of the times while also offering readers a series of thought-provoking reflections on key areas of local encounters and misunderstandings regarding Islam. It presents the thoughts of twenty-two personalities (including academics, journalists, and politicians, both Muslims and non-Muslims) on issues that frequently provoke disagreements in practice, thus attempting to provide an inspiring insight into this turbulent and ambiguous topic.
