Beschreibung
Although the avant-garde presents itself as a movement almost devoid of artistic roots, emerging from itself, it reacts to the changes of the modern world and the position of man within it, to what has been perceived and named as modernity. The author focuses in the book on the Czech post-war avant-garde and its prose in a broader European context. Enriching the interpretation with a new genre (the short story), and thus with a number of authors, allows her to dynamize the canonical image of the given epoch and to problematize the fundamental oppositions of expressionism vs. avant-garde and, above all, individualism vs. collectivism. The latter she presents as the main connection between the Czech post-war avant-garde and European events (the collective and one of its manifestations, the crowd, figures as one of the main themes of modernity and the avant-garde). Within this opposition, she also interprets the prose of French unanimism as the main source of inspiration for the Czech post-war avant-garde and its (collectivist) prose.
