Beschreibung
The book is published to mark the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Skiers' Union, the first central skiing organization in the world. It traces how skis arrived in the Czech lands at the end of the 19th century, how skiing became not only a sport but also a means of practical use or entertainment for its inhabitants. It does not focus solely on Czech skiers but also on the performances of German skiers and their mutual relationships. In addition to organizational aspects, it addresses the successes of Czechoslovak and, after 1992, Czech competitors in the context of the most significant international competitions, such as world championships and the Winter Olympic Games. The final chapters deal with the rise of snowboarding at the end of the 20th century and the expanding range of skiing disciplines, especially acrobatic ones. The book also includes the development of skiing equipment and gear.
