There is a significant and very peculiar objection to the claim that "science refutes the existence of races." Even if the existence of races were incorrect, the word "refutes" needs to be reconsidered. In other words, does racist ideology operate at the level of "proving" and "refuting" or rather at the level of interpretation? Furthermore, is it possible to turn to "science" to determine the truth or falsehood of various ideologies without falling into plain scientism? To assert that racist theories of the past were only based on pseudoscientific grounds may comfort staunch anti-racists, but it is not the truth. The "scientific" competence of many racist authors, from Linnaeus and Blumenbach to Otmar von Verschuer or Vacher de Lapouge and many others, is undeniable. It would be erroneous to believe with many racists that racism is scientifically well-founded, or to believe with many anti-racists that today’s controversial authors are merely "pseudoscientists."
