In 1929, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast. Seventeen-year-old Lenora Hope was widely believed to be responsible, but the police could never prove it. Apart from denying the killings, Lenora has never spoken publicly about that night and has remained inside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre took place. In 1983, home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives to care for Lenora after her previous nurse flees in the middle of the night. Now in her seventies, confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak after a series of strokes, Lenora communicates with Kit by typing sentences on an old typewriter. Then she makes an irresistible offer: she wants to tell Kit everything. As they write about the events leading to the massacre, it becomes clear that the story is more complicated than people know. When new details about the previous nurse’s departure emerge, Kit begins to suspect that Lenora is not telling the whole truth and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care may be far more dangerous than she first appeared.
