Intensely autobiographical, it portrays a caring man’s disintegration under the strain of his wife’s illness and a lifestyle that erodes his moral values, while Dick’s descent into alcoholism eerily anticipates Fitzgerald’s own fate. Initially unsuccessful when published in 1934, the novel later came to be regarded as perhaps its author’s most poignant masterpiece.
