Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now he is sure he will be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while believing him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he is alive. Even if he could make contact, his supplies would run out long before a rescue could arrive. In all likelihood, however, he will not have time to starve to death. Damaged machinery, an unforgiving environment, or simple human error are much more likely to kill him first. Mark is not ready to give up. Drawing on his ingenuity, engineering skills, and a relentless refusal to quit, he confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after another.
