Cherry’s husband is in Hollywood making a movie, and almost nobody knows that he is not coming home. Tom is the creator of Thursday, a comic strip that has become an international phenomenon. The strip is semi-autobiographical, which means it contains a character based on Cherry, known as Baby: wide-hipped, double-chinned and unmistakably like her. Cherry never wanted to see herself caricatured on the page, let alone on the big screen, but strangers now recognize her from the store. While Tom becomes rich and famous in Los Angeles, Cherry is left looking after his dog and the house where they planned to raise a family, wondering who she is without him. Then, one night, she goes out to see her favourite band and catches the attention of Russ Sutton, who knew her when she was a young art student. Russ knows Cherry, likes Cherry, and has never heard of Thursday.
