Through a series of case histories, some no longer than a few lines, Freud explores how normal people make slips of speech, writing, reading and remembering in everyday life, and reveals what they betray about the existence of a subtext or subliminal motive behind conscious actions. He explains that most of these slips tend to be relatively harmless, although some are more sinister, particularly those involving pride or thwarted love.
