F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last completed novel, Tender Is the Night, is set between the First World War and the Wall Street Crash, when the French Riviera is a fashionable destination for wealthy Americans. Among the most prominent visitors are psychoanalyst Dick Diver and his wife Nicole, who hold court at their villa. Rosemary Hoyt, a film star, enters their circle and is immediately attracted to them, but understands little of the dark secrets and hidden corruption that hold them together. As Dick grows closer to Rosemary, he fractures the delicate structure of his marriage and sets both Nicole and himself on a dangerous path where only the strongest can survive. In this exquisite, lyrical novel, Fitzgerald draws on the essence of his own life while depicting an age of materialism, shattered idealism and broken dreams. Fitzgerald acquired a mythical status in American literary history, and his masterwork The Great Gatsby is considered by many to be the great American novel. His writing was also deeply influenced by his traumatic marriage to Zelda Sayre and her gradual descent into insanity. Alongside numerous short stories, he wrote five novels, including This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender Is the Night and the unfinished The Last Tycoon.
