This sumptuous gift set includes a replica of the very rare first edition of The Hobbit, the only edition in which readers can now experience the original version of the story, before Tolkien revised it into the form enjoyed by readers since 1951. Published on 21 September 1937 in a print run of 1,500 copies, the first edition features a beautiful cover, nearly a dozen black-and-white illustrations and two black-and-red maps by Tolkien himself. Its scarcity has made original copies prohibitively expensive, while later textual changes, particularly those to Chapter 5 made in 1947 to bring the story into line with The Lord of the Rings, have made the original version difficult to read. Alongside the facsimile first edition, the set includes an exclusive CD of archive recordings of Tolkien reading from The Hobbit, a special copy of Thror’s map revealing its secret moon-runes when held to the light, and a booklet recounting the history of The Hobbit and including related writings by J. R. R. Tolkien.
