Her name is Modesta — but she is everything but humble and mild. Modesta, a woman deemed amoral and passionate by common standards, is protected during historical and personal storms by a special invincible talisman — the art of joy. She was born on January 1, 1900, in a small Sicilian village to a poor family in an even poorer country — the same day as the new twentieth century. The little girl, who discovered physical pleasure in her childhood, knows what she wants and does not hesitate to fight for it. The name Modesta in Italian means everything she is not — humble, mild, and resigned to never achieving what she desires. That is how they wanted her to be — but she is wild and untamed. From the convent where she was raised by the order's sisters, she finds herself in a noble palace, where, thanks to her talent and determination, she becomes the head of the family through marriage. Women's emancipation, free love, homosexual relationships, violence, hypocrisy, diseases, abortions, and illegitimate children, the ever-present ruthless mafia, fascism stifling free culture, wars, political ideas infected with merciless ideology… Modesta navigates the history of the entire twentieth century with a free mind and incredible courage, unafraid to go against the tide.
