Harrison Foster is a lawyer specializing in crisis management. After a fire in the stables of trainer Ryan Chadwick, which claims the lives of six very valuable horses, including the Derby favorite, he is called from London to Newmarket. Harry discovers that it was likely not an ordinary fire, and human remains are also found at the scene. None of the staff is missing, so who is the charred victim? Harry knows very little about horses; in fact, he doesn't like them, but he is reluctantly drawn into a world where more attention is paid to thoroughbred horse stars than to people. The Chadwicks are a racing dynasty with dysfunctional family relationships. There is discontent and sibling rivalry between generations, simmering like volcanic magma beneath a fragile layer of respectability. Harry represents the owner of the charred Derby favorite, and as he delves deeper into the unanswered questions surrounding the horse's death, he finds himself in life-threatening danger.
