Is it merely conscience that compels a person to constantly reflect on their soul, or is there something much deeper, something that an ordinary mortal cannot reach but only suspects lurks, ready to strike at any moment? In his most recent novel, Atonement, Ian McEwan has perfected this idea. Thirteen-year-old Briony weaves her life around certain notions that are meant to lead her unfailingly to a specific, clearly defined goal. She adapts everything that can be adapted to these dreams. What cannot be adapted must be helped along. With the fanatical persistence of a teenager and a fantasy pushed to the extreme, she drives the protagonists of her private game of life to a tragedy for which she will have to atone for the rest of her life. McEwan intertwines the threads of destinies that ultimately merge into a single, powerful, and deeply truthful image of the past century. The author offers possibilities and poses questions that are difficult to answer definitively. But he does not provide clear answers either, leaving it to the reader to decide which path to take - alongside Briony, with her accomplices, or with the victim? The cathartic conclusion is not clear-cut, just as no one's life is simply black or white.
