Beschreibung
McEwan's story of a wedding night from the early sixties, set against the beautiful backdrop of the southern English coast, offers a profound reflection on the era's conditioning of human behavior, feelings, and relationships. The plot unfolds in times when the hopes of an upcoming free-spirited decade and the first songs of the Beatles resonate in the air, whispers of an American invention in the form of the contraceptive pill circulate, yet society remains entirely captive to traditional morality. Both protagonists of the novella are 'young, educated' and free of prejudice, as the author does not fail to point out in the opening sentence, and yet their relationship is conditioned by the times much more than they are willing to admit. A bittersweet recap from the perspective of many years later at the end of the book provides eloquent testimony to this. In 2017, a film of the same name was made based on the author's screenplay.
