The year is 2021... Although technology on Earth has reached its peak, most of the population suffers from severe bodily disorders. A major pharmaceutical company holds the necessary cure for a deadly disease, but refuses to provide it. Therefore, a special courier is sent to obtain the secret formula. Johnny Mnemonic (Keanu Reeves) has a microchip implanted in his head, allowing him to transfer a vast amount of data desperately needed to save humanity. He is pursued by Yakuza agents and a fanatical priest, Preacher (in an unforgettable performance by Dolph Lundgren), but Johnny is determined to fulfill his mission completely. The film is based on a short story by William Gibson, one of the most famous authors of cyberpunk, a sci-fi genre where information technology and artificial intelligence play a central role. Gibson's work introduced concepts such as virtual reality, cyberspace, and the matrix for the very first time. It is no coincidence that genre lovers consider this film a precursor to the cult classic MATRIX.
