A film full of attractive battle scenes and pyrotechnic magic, complemented by a number of subplots, especially the love story of an American and a Japanese girl. The story begins on April 18, 1942, in Hiroshima, where a young Japanese naval officer informs Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy, that Tokyo has been bombed. In Pearl Harbor, Captain Matt Garth visits the American naval command. A retaliation from Admiral Yamamoto's Japanese fleet is expected, and Garth requests an estimate of Japanese intentions from the intelligence service. Although Joseph J. Rochefort manages to partially break the Japanese cipher key, he can only decrypt about 15% of what he intercepts. It is certain that something is brewing, but exactly what is not known. Outside the headquarters, Garth unexpectedly meets his son Tom, a young soldier, who reveals that he is in love with a Japanese girl named Haruko Sakura, who was arrested when she came to visit her parents and ask for their permission to marry. Garth is upset by the news but promises to help the girl and her parents if possible. On board the battleship Yamato, Admiral Yamamoto's flagship, an important meeting is taking place.
