A hurricane rages outside, but that is nothing compared to the storm brewing in a hotel in Key Largo. Sadistic gangster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) is hiding here, holding hotel owner Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall), her disabled father-in-law (Lionel Barrymore), and former soldier Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) at gunpoint. McCloud is the only one capable of standing up to the aggressive Rocco, but it seems that the reality of the post-war world has drained him of all desire to fight. John Huston contributed to the screenplay and skillfully directed the adaptation of Maxwell Anderson's 1939 play, adorned with a remarkable Oscar-winning* performance by Claire Trevor as Rocco's kind-hearted alcoholic mistress. In Huston's hands, this drama became an impressive, steamy classic.
