It begins with a lavish wedding and ends with the apocalypse. The film Melancholia by Danish director Lars von Trier tells a mesmerizing story of two sisters (Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg), the younger of whom is getting married and becoming a new mother. The wedding festivities take place at an ancient countryside estate, and the general festive mood is clouded by a sudden threat in the form of a red planet that has emerged from behind the sun, posing an imminent collision with Earth. Director Trier is known for his precisely graduated atmosphere with unexpected plots and twists that lead to an even more unexpected ending.
