Before dawn, two soldiers entered the house of mourning, unaware of what had happened, and ordered the widow to harness the cart and go with them. Yes, she thought to herself, it is a clear divine command. She prayed not to falter and to have the strength to fulfill justice... A dramatic yet very intimate story from the last days of World War II, addressing the important ethical question of the right to revenge, was directed in 1966 by Karel Kachyňa based on a story by Jan Procházka. The role of the rural widow Krista, who awakens love within herself instead of seeking revenge, was written by Jan Procházka for the brilliant Iva Janžurová.
