The evocative film drama OIL LAMPS was directed by Juraj Herz based on the novel of the same name by Jaroslav Havlíček. It tells the tragic story of the aging girl Štěpa, living at the turn of the century in the suffocating environment of a Czech small town, in an atmosphere of misunderstanding and feigned emotions, pretense, and falsehood. Štěpa is constantly pressured by her mother to consider suitors, who must come from the same circle as she does. However, Štěpa is different from other girls. As if touched by the spirit of emancipation, she earns a reputation as a girl of 'loose morals,' which naturally deters suitors from the local gentry. Rather than become an old maid, she marries her cousin, a failed officer. On the day of the wedding, however, she has no idea what terrible illness is haunting her fiancé...
