On his way back from a conference in Bordeaux, Maigret took a detour through Fontenay-le-Comte just to see an old friend. However, you can't step into the same river twice, especially in a weepy nest where the downpour has opened the floodgates of the commissioner's grumpiness to such an extent that a bigger grump could not be found in the Vendée region. No wonder. The sniveling small-town folk here evidently envy even an extra penny, the socialists are on the rise, not to mention the arrogance of the gentry. And on top of that, the brutal murder – a triple one at that. First, the brother-in-law of a local nobleman, then a lonely widow, and after her, a harmless drunkard, all beaten to death with a plumbing pipe. It makes no sense. The police station is launching raids left and right, but an experienced detective knows that in the jumble of miserable clues, it's first necessary to establish a motive. And quickly, before the mob lynches an innocent person. Even the hardened Parisian Maigret is afraid, but what thread can he pull to unravel this series of madness?
