Symbolically, it is framed by a pair of texts that were not published during Kafka's lifetime: the early Description of a Struggle, regarded as the gateway to his world, and the late The Burrow, a meditative monologue written six months before his death. He writes: "It is nice to have such a burrow for the coming old age, to be under a roof when autumn begins." In addition to the famous stories The Judgment, In the Penal Colony, or A Country Doctor, the anthology also includes a number of lesser-known yet equally polished texts.
