The Schmelzer family, which settled here in the 15th century, therefore tried their hand at saddle-making, button-making, sending boys to factories and girls to sewing, and occasionally smuggling something. And yet, despite all the misfortune of this harshly branded corner of life, they would not give up. However, the determined yet industrious family from the village of Bach, a decent distance from Vejprty, would be traversed by both world wars and hostilities, due to which Czechs and Germans clashed as young men at dance parties. Even if newcomers from the interior – like the enlightened Jan Koudela and later his son Josef – tried to reconcile them with their own example, they had no chance.
