All men will be brothers = Alle Menschen werden Brüder. Do we mean it seriously, or will we again give in to the wild history? ***** The Krušné Mountains ridge used to be an Eldorado for seekers of precious metals, but with the development of modern times, poverty prevailed in the remote station on the border of two nations. The Schmelzer family, which settled here in the 15th century, therefore tried their hand at saddle-making, button-making, sending boys to factories and girls to sewing, and occasionally smuggling something. And yet, despite all the misfortune of this harshly branded corner of life, they would not give up. However, the determined yet industrious family from the village of Bach, a decent distance from Vejprty, would be traversed by both world wars and hostilities, due to which Czechs and Germans clashed as young men at dance parties. Even if newcomers from the interior – like the enlightened Jan Koudela and later his son Josef – tried to reconcile them with their own example, they had no chance. Irrational hatred was fueled from above, first from Hitler's Reich, then in return from Prague, and so after 1945, the plundered western borderlands would not rise from a state of clinical death… ***** Zdeněk Šmíd, even in his most serious book, did not hide the nature of a storyteller-humorist, who comments on the ruthless reality of his homeland…
