Family can be a great support, but also an unbearable burden... Taking care of the public library while also managing a husband and two teenage children can sometimes be quite challenging. However, Veronika was handling her difficult role quite well – until, after her mother's death, she also had to worry about her unbearable father with a large house, a garden, and several dogs. Even the increasing amount of wine consumed and cigarettes smoked cannot rid her of the feeling that she is slowly failing on all fronts – as a director, wife, mother, and daughter.
