She spent her childhood in pre-war Britain, worked as a correspondent in Cairo during the war, and earned her place in a purely male discipline: historiography. In the turmoil of war, she found and lost true love, had a brother she adored, a lover she couldn't trust, and gave birth to a daughter she unfortunately couldn't love...
