The story inspired by the fate of the Tugendhat villa in Brno reflects the tragic destiny of the Czech nation during the 20th century in the lives of the house's owners. The engaged couple Viktor and Liesel want to enter married life in style and modernity – in a house that will embody their progressive outlook on life in its very foundations. The Jewish-Christian couple from the upper class has the means for timeless elegance and in 1929 hires architect Reiner von Abt, whose minimalist vision of connecting indoor and outdoor spaces through maximum use of glass surfaces excites them. But is a house open to prying eyes suitable for people living lives full of small and larger secrets? The private pleasures and parties of the First Republic elite in this architectural gem will soon be interrupted by the Nazis, forcing the couple to leave both the villa and the country. The unusual building then passes from one hand to another – after the war, it is seized by the communists, who are particularly irritated by its opulent distinctiveness... The novel was nominated for the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2009.
