Magdalena, Libuše, Eva... one family line and the same fate: all grow up without a father. Magdalena experienced the Nazi occupation, Libuše's childhood, framed by collectivization, ends during the occupation by the Warsaw Pact troops, and Eva is a child of normalization. One by one, they tell their unique stories of love, hope, light in the darkness, and the inner source of strength that allows each of them to hold their heads high despite the adversities of fate and history. And one by one, they also tell about Maria, their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who, as an archetypal feminine deity, nurtures and spreads that strength. Through her heroines, the author has constructed a story of one family in a firm yet fragile, transparent and melodic style, very simple despite tragic circumstances, very ordinary despite great history, and very strong despite its commonality.
